Hokonui Localities The Hokonui Locality is working to improve health and happiness in Hokonui. Learn more at www.hokonuilocality.nz
The establishment of localities is a fundamental part of the reform of New Zealand’s health system.
The establishment of the Hokonui Locality will embed a stronger focus on meeting the needs of our community and whānau.
This means priorities being set by locals for locals, and the provision of a range of care services that collaborate to improve health and happiness in our region.
It will also see us focus on wellbeing and prevention. Because to achieve health and happiness, we need to nurture not only our physical health, but also our mental, spiritual and social health.

Adult Oral Health Programme
Struggling to afford dental costs? We want to help.
Birch Lane Dental has received funding through the Hokonui Locality to help members of our community receive free dental care they may not otherwise be able to afford. Treatment is provided on a referral basis within set eligibility criteria. If you’re facing financial constraints, are not eligible for Work and Income grants for dental treatment, and have immediate dental issues affecting your life, you might be eligible.
The programme is referral-based for people residing in the wider Gore District. Learn more to see if you qualify!

Hokonui Hauora Fund
One of the clear messages emerging from our consultation with community is that people are feeling the stresses of the last few years. Increases to the cost of living, the long-term impact of a global pandemic, and ongoing pressures being felt by the primary industry have had a direct and adverse impact on people in our community. It has also meant our whānau, friends and wider community have missed out on maintaining strong connections and shared experiences. Community resources and services have suffered as a consequence.
We want to help.
The Hokonui Locality has created a new fund to support community led activities and events in the wider Gore District. Groups can apply for up to $1,000 for events and activities that encourage people to come together. This fund is about enabling our communities to help feel connected, be more resilient and work towards a happier, healthier Hokonui.

Ready For Living | Te Ara Tiketike
We want the Gore District to be the best place for people of all ages, including older people, to live and thrive.
Gore District has the third highest population over 65s when compared to surrounding regions and New Zealand. The Regional Economic Activity Data shows that 20.2% of Gore population is over 65 as at 2018. This is predicted to increase to 26% of the population over 65 by 2033. We need to ensure we keep people connected and build wider community awareness of the issues older people face in their daily life.
The strategy focuses on creating a more enabling and inclusive environment that is supportive and accommodating of people of all ages. The strategy has assisted with building our knowledge and understanding of the needs of older people to enable the best things to be in place for the future, to become a truly intergenerational community, where people of all ages and stages interact and cooperate to everyone’s benefit.
The strategy sets out the priorities based on insights from workshops with our older community and agencies. These are:
- Housing – Ngā Whare
- Employment – Mahi
- Volunteerism – Tūao
- Health and well-being – Hauora
- Communication and information – Kia Whai Mōhiohio te Kaumātua i ngā Kaupapa
- Recreation – Ngā Mahi A-rēhia
- Mobility and Accessibility – Ngā Ara me Āheitanga
- Safety – Haumarutanga
Living Well in Later Years

Free Parking and Swimming for Over 80’s

So, we’ve rolled out free parking and swimming for people aged 80 years and older.
