Heartland Services - your one stop shop for government and community services and information 

Heartland Service's provide a convenient meeting place for local people to discuss their needs directly with government agencies and community organisations. Each Heartland Service centre is managed by a coordinator who can help you arrange face to face meetings with government, and non-government services, identify and obtain the government forms you need, and access government and community websites and publications. Appointments and referrals to other agencies can also be made through our centre. Your Heartland Service Coordinator has information available about many other agencies and services. This service is free, convenient and friendly.  The Coordinator is available Mon-Fri 9am-4pm 03-2088480

Strengthening Families pulls together support for families/whanau in New Zealand. The people helping your family may be a budget advisor, truancy officer, social worker, medical specialist, counsellor,teacher or other support worker.  

You work out together what support your family/whanau needs and what each service is going to do.  It is set up so families/whanau tell their story once to everyone at the same time. Then everyone agrees on a plan to move you forward. Strengthening Families is free and 100% voluntary.

Strengthening Families might be right if you are facing challenges like: 

  • finding a warm, comfortable home for your family/ whanau
  • getting help with your child or young persons health or behaviour
  • money troubles
  • doing something about your child not doing well at school
  • coping with stress at home.
  • family relationships
  • family violence
  • addiction.

Gore and District's Youth Worker Service offers a strengths-based, client focused approach to empowering young people, removing barriers and advocacy. All young people have the right good health, well being, education, the prospect of good employment and participation in community life. 

The service is completely free for young people aged 5-18 and living within Gore and surrounding districts. Ali Boyle, Youth Worker, provides support, encouragement, guidance and positive role-modelling. The Youth Worker Service provides skill and tools to develop well being, communication, knowledge, understanding, positive relationships, conflict management and coping techniques. This can be delivered one-to-one, or in group sessions. 

The Youth Worker Service can support a client with difficulties in self-confidence, coping, social skills, education, peer relationships, self-esteem, problematic behaviour, or drug & alcohol abuse. 


Mataura Community Development - Working to a community led development model the aim of this project is to support & coordinate the local Mataura community to achieve healthy, prosperous and positive outcomes. This varies from leading or assisting with local projects and new initiatives or providing support or advice to various community groups. Eleanor Ranstead (otherwise known as Ele) is the current Mataura Community Development Coordinator based in the Mataura office (the old public library) in McQueen Ave.The office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9am – 1pm as well as alternating Monday and Saturday mornings. COMMUNITY LIAISON MEETING 

As part of our commitment to networking and information sharing, the Community Connections Centre hosts a monthly Community Liaison Meeting.The purpose of the Community Liaison Meeting is to foster networking and information sharing within our district. These meetings are designed for people to be able to put faces to names, find out what types of social and community organisations are available, explore how we can use resources to their best potential, and gain greater understanding about each individual service. The meetings are scheduled once a month, on the third Wednesday from 9:30- 10:30am. These meetings are generally informal in nature, focusing on information sharing.

The Centre maintains a large database used to distribute information across Eastern Southland. If you wish to join the database please contact Kelly at the Centre. Your information will remain safe and private and you will receive a copy of the Community Networking Trust Privacy Statement. If you have information/training/workshops/seminars you wish to share across our database please contact Kelly at the Centre.
